5 Common Window Measuring Mistakes

Measuring your windows for new blinds or shades may seem like an easy task. However, a simple mistake can cause your blinds or shades to be mismeasured or ill-fitting. Go through the checklist below to ensure that you do not make any mistakes in measuring your windows.

Not Measuring All Windows in a Room

It can be easy and quick to measure one window in a room and assume that all the other windows are the same size - especially when they look very similar. It is important to get the correct measurements for each and every single window. Take the time to correctly measure all windows and you won't end up with incorrect sized window treatments.

Only Taking One Measurement for Width and Height

It is important to take three measurements for each the height and length. For the height, take the left, center, and right measurements and for the width, take the top, center, and bottom. These measurements can vary significantly. Based on what window treatment you want, you may have to take the biggest or smallest measurement. Be sure to take all necessary measurements.

Not Using a Tape Measure for Measurements

When measuring, make sure you are using a steel tape measure. Soft linen sewing measures are not suited for straight lines. A tape measure also ensure that you are able to measure most sized windows accurately. A ruler or yardstick will be very difficult in accurately measuring larger windows. When using a steel tape measure, do not bend the tape. Instead, let the tape measure sit flat and add the measurement of the the measure itself.

Measuring the Old Window Treatment

If you are ordering new blinds or shades, do not simply measure your existing window treatment. If you do, the size of the new one will not be the size of the one you measured and will most likely be too small. The blind or shade is made to fit solely based on the window's specific measurements.

Taking the Measurement Incorrectly or Not Knowing the Measurement

Some people may have difficulty in recording the actual measurements of the window. If you are struggling with this, it may be a good idea to refresh your memory on what each tick mark on the measuring tape represents. Be sure to round down to the nearest 1/8".

Another common mistake is mixing up the width and the height when recording the measurements. Double check that you are recording correctly before you order new blinds.

If you keep in mind these common mistakes and how to avoid them, your new blinds will fit perfectly and look beautifully!
