How to Make your Blinds and Shades Safe
The cords that attach to blinds can be a hazard for kids. The long cords can be a strangulation hazard for small children and pets. It is important to not allow the cords to dangle freely in their reach. Our guide will go over simple ways to make your window treatments safer for kids and pets.
Install Cordless Blinds
You will not have to worry about cords if your window treatments do not have cords to begin with. Many stylish cordless blinds and shades exist while being very wallet friendly. Wood blinds, cellular shades, roller shades, mini blinds, and more have cordless options. If you are worried about cords, this option would be ideal.
Reduce Cord Length
The ideal length of a blind cord would be around 40% of the total length of the blind. If your blinds are longer than this ratio, it would be a good idea to cut them down. When shortening your cords be sure to do so when the cords are completely lowered.
Install Cord Cleats to Your Blinds
Cord cleats can be installed to either side of a window or to a wall and they help wrap the blind's cords wrapped together so that they are not dangling. If you want more information on what they look like, visit our page here. Cord cleats can be used on a variety of blinds and shades.
Remove Cords and Replace with Tilt Mechanisms
If you do not want cordless blinds but still want to remove cords entirely, tilt mechanisms may be the way to go. Tilt mechanisms allow you to operate the blind without you needing the cord.
Move Things Around
In addition to the above items, another good way to make your blinds safer is to make sure kids and pets are not able to go near the blinds in the first place. Keep furniture away from blinds and windows as they may be able to climb on the furniture and reach the blinds. Making the cords inaccessible in the first place, makes it so they cannot hurt themselves with the cords.
