Measuring Windows for Blinds and Shades
Correctly measuring your windows for your blinds and shades is the most important thing you must do before you purchase them. If your measurements are slightly off, the blind or shade will not fit your window. This article will go over how to measure your windows correctly for both inside and outside mounts. If you are not sure of the difference between the two mounting types, read our article here. For measurements, be sure to measure to the nearest 1/8".
How to Measure Windows for Inside Mount
- Take the width measurements of the window at the top, middle, and bottom. Use the smallest measurement and round down 18". For vertical blinds and solar shades, take the width measurement from the top of the window only.
- Take the height of the inside of the window from the top of the frame to the window sill. Measure at the left side, right side, and center of the window and take the biggest of all three measurements. If you are measuring for sheer shades, vertical blinds, solar or roller shades, take the smallest measurement.
- Deduct 1/4" if you do not want the blind to rest on the window sill. If the window does not have a sill, measure to where you want the blind or shade to rest when completely extended.
How to Measure Windows for Outside Mount
- Measure the distance from the points where you want the blind to cover. Typically, the blind should cover the window by at least 1 1/2" to reduce light gap. Read about what a light gap is here.
- Measure the distance from where the top of the blind will be above the window sill. In most cases, the blind will be at least 1 1/2" Measure down to where you would like the blind or shade to rest when completely extended.
If you are still unsure if you are measuring correctly, contact a professional. They will help ensure that your window is properly measured for an inside mount or outside mount.
