Shorten Your Wood/ Faux Wood Blinds
Sometimes it is easier to pick up a stock blinds and fit them to your existing window than for you to get a custom size blind. Money and time may be a factor in your decision to manually shorten your blinds. Regardless of your reasoning, shortening your blinds is super easy and only requires scissors. We will cover two methods of shortening your wood or faux wood blind.
Method #1 for Shortening
- Lower your blind as low as possible and open the slats of the blind.
- With a sticky note or some other marking device, mark the exact slat where you want the blind to end when the blind is completely down.
- Remove the slats below the marked slat. (You may need to use some force and break them!)
- Remove the bottom rail buttons and the ladder string.
- Using scissors, cut the ladder strings two rungs below the last slat.
- Move the bottom rail to the last slat of the blind.
- Remove the bottom rail buttons an put the ladder strings into each hole.
- Fix the tassels on the lift strings to fir the blind. Common rule of thumb is that the string is less than 50% of the total length of the blind.
Method #2 for Shortening
- Lower your blind as low as possible and open the slats
- Remove the bottom rail plugs
- Untie the knots of the lift cords and remove the bottoms rail
- Pull up each lift cord so that you can remove extra slats
- Take the bottom rail and insert it below the last slat of your blind
- Thread the lift cords back through the bottom rail
- Place the bottom rail on your window sill and open the slats of the blind
- Cut the ladder strings below the top most rung
- Place the bottom rail plugs back onto the lift cord and tie knots to secure them
- Raise the blind and the extra slack will be gone
- Tie the extra ladder cords around the bottom rail in a knot and place them in the bottom rail holes. Replace the plugs. (If the strings don't fit, trim any excess string.
Congratulations! You've successfully shorten your wood or faux wood blinds! Be sure the test the blind to make sure all components are secure and the blind is completely functional. Again, please note that once you shorten blinds you cannot unshorten them since the other slats were broken/removed and the ladder strings were cut.
