Fixing Bent Vertical Blinds

The slats on a vertical blind can become bent and damage over time. Vertical blinds can become damaged over time with every day use, on accident by children or pets, or other operational mistakes. It is easy to tell when one slat is bent or crooked since the slats surrounding it are straight and undamaged. Besides aesthetic purposes, the vertical blind with a bent slat may not function as well as if vertical blind with no bent slat. We will guide you through a few simple steps that will help straighten up those bent blinds (Note: this is a general guide that may or may not work for you and your vertical blind). Do not try to unbend them by hand. You risk damaging the blind even further.

  1. Remove the bent blind slat(s) and remove unbent slats as well.
  2. Fill a bathtub with hot water and put the bent portion of  the slat in the water and hold it there for 2-3 minutes. You might want to use gloves for this part to protect you hands. The hot water will make the blind easy to bend and mold.
  3. Take the slat out of the water and place it between the unbent slats. Be sure the slats line up correctly and use clamps to hold the stack of slats together. This will help the bent slat to take the shape of the unbent slats. Keep the slats together for ten minutes.
  4. Check to see if the original slat is flat. If not, repeat the process again.
  5. If the slat is flat, repeat the process for other bent slats. As you do this, ensure the water remains warm.
  6. Dry the slats using a cloth and and reinstall the slats onto the blind. Check to make sure the slats operate correctly.

It is important to use hot water and not a hair dryer to heat up the blinds. Hot air will damage the blinds. Also, be sure to check if the blinds' material is able to be submerged into water without getting damaged.
