How to Install Roller Shades

Roller shades are one of the most popular window treatments for residential and commercial locations. Our guide will show you how to properly install roller shades. Please note that this guide is a general installation guide for roller shades. Please consult the installation guide that came with the shades. If you need a guide on the components or parts for your roller shade, refer to our guide.

Before Installing Roller Shades

First, you need to identify if your roller shades are inside mounted or outside mounted. We will have a different set of instructions for installing inside mounted roller shades and outside mounted roller shades. Although both types of mounting have similar installation instructions, we will separate the instructions since there are a few differences. If you are not sure the differences between inside mounted and outside mounted, refer to our other guide here.

The tools you may need are listed below:

  • Pencil
  • Drill
  • Step stool/ladder (if necessary)
  • Tape measure
  • Screwdriver (Phillips head)

Installing Inside Mounted Roller Shades

  1. Fit and attach mounting brackets to window frame, ceiling, or molding. The brackets should be installed within the window frame itself. Hold the bracket into position and mark where it is. Install the first bracket on this mark. Repeat this step for the other side for the second bracket. Double check the brackets are inline with each other using a measuring tape or leveler. For the bracket installation, it might be easiest to pre-drill holes before actually installing them. Make sure some clearance is present between the roller shade and the top of the frame. This will help in the next step with putting shade into the brackets.
  2. Locate the spring loaded pin on one end of the roller shade. Fit this end into one bracket. For the other end, fit the shade end with "hooks" into the slots of the opposite bracket. Once both ends are in, push the shade down down into the bracket with the slots. You should be able to tell when the shade is secured.
  3. Test your newly installed roller shade to make sure the stop feature is adjusted how you want them and that the shade has even movement.

Installing Outside Mounted Roller Shades

  1. Fit the shade into the brackets and then position the center of the shade over the window. From there, mark the wall on for one side of the bracket and then remove the shade. Install the bracket on this marking. Repeat the previous steps to install the other bracket. For the bracket installation, it might be easiest to pre-drill holes before actually installing them.
