Measuring a Door for Blinds/Shades

Measuring a door for a window treatment is very similar to measuring a window. This guide will go over how to accurately measure your door for a blind or shade. You will need a measuring tape, something to write with, and something to record your measurements. For the most part, you will be measuring doors as if they were outside mounted windows. The guide will cover how to measure regular doors, sliding doors, and French doors.

If you need help measuring your windows as well, we also have a guide for that.

Regular Door

  1. Measure the width of the door three times. One measurement will be the top of the frame, one will be the middle, and one will be the bottom. You will record the largest measurement. From this measurement add four inches to limit light leaks and maximize light control.
  2. Next measure from where you will place the headrail of the blind or shade all the way down to the bottom. Typically, the headrail will sit three inches above the door. Just like measuring the width, you will take three measurements. Once down the left side, once down the middle, and once down the right side. Take the largest number.

Sliding Door

  1. The steps for a sliding door are almost identical to that of a regular door. However, one slight difference in measurement taking is needed.
  2. Note: If you are measuring for sliding doors, take the smallest height and take off about 1/2" so they blinds hang above the floor.

French Door

  1. If you a measuring for a French Door, be weary of locks and handles that may get in the way during installation. Steps will be similar to a regular door except for the width and height measure the glass on the door and add 2-3".
